Dissertation

Tentatively titled “Extremist Group Ideology’s Impact on Violence”, my dissertation uses a comparative approach to understand if the underlying ideology of an extremist group has an impact on how violent the group is. In order to measure this, I am utilizing primary source publications to establish the core tenants of five ideological groupings. I am then converting those texts into data and using text mining and network analysis alongside extremist attack data to understand if certain ideological tenants have a relationship with the level of violence perpetrated by believers in that ideology.

To undertake this work, I am utilizing literature from political science, psychology, sociology, criminology, and data science. My work is mixed-methods, using both qualitative methods, such as case studies, alongside quantitative methods, such as text mining, network analysis, and regression.
